A retired couple looking to extend their six-bedroom property to create flexible ground floor space.

The Challenge

Removing the existing rear wall of the house to the ground floor whilst supporting the first floor and ensuring the kitchen was live and useable for the duration of the works.

The Doherty Solution

We added a large extension with 50sqm of floor area, a complete folding glass wall to the rear elevation of the extension, forming a new 4.2m wide opening on the rear of the existing property which resulted in an open plan area with a total floor space of 79sqm.

  • Due to the extensive open plan design, substantial structural steel work was required to both the new structure and to support the existing structure
  • Through coloured render was applied to the new extension and the external elevation of the existing property to provide a uniform and consistent finish
  • Rear landscaping included five different seating terraces, linking footpaths, two water features, raised terraces, lawned areas, and corten steel lawn edgings and planters
  • For the upkeep of the garden, we installed water supplies for irrigation and a power supply for outdoor lighting

The client was so delighted with their home extension and property improvements, they commissioned us to landscape the front of the property.

In the summer of 2022, we commissioned Brendan and his team to undertake a significant remodelling of our home. Work started as promised and proceeded in a timely manner subject to weather problems. All the work was completed in April 2023. All variations were agreed on a monthly basis and we felt in control of the work and the costs involved. We were delighted with the results. If we ever have a similar project again, we would certainly use Brendan and his team.
